Custom Fiberglass Statues and 3D Characters: the Guide for Theme Parks, Hotels and Brands

Scenic Studios Design & Production • 17 de agosto de 2026

What are custom fiberglass statues and 3D characters?

A custom fiberglass statue is a three-dimensional piece built through hand-sculpted molding and fiberglass lamination, designed and produced to the exact specifications of a project — from a licensed brand character to a monumental sculpture for a hotel façade. It's the material most used across the theme park and hospitality industry because it combines lightness, structural strength and a finish quality that other techniques, such as 3D printing, still can't match at large scale. At Scenic Studios, we've spent 25 years manufacturing these pieces at our 3,000+ m² production facility in Cancún, for brands such as Nickelodeon, Karisma Hotels & Resorts and Playa Resorts.

If you're about to quote a 3D character, a sculptural replica or a monumental decorative piece, this guide answers the questions design and procurement teams ask us most: which material to use, how long the process takes, how licensed characters are handled, and how well the pieces hold up in tropical climates.

Fiberglass, foam, 3D printing or polyurea: which material fits your project?

Not every sculptural project needs the same material. The right choice depends on three factors: the size of the piece, whether it will live outdoors or indoors, and how long it needs to last. This table summarizes when to use each one:

Material Best for Outdoor durability Level of detail
Fiberglass Brand characters, monumental sculptures, permanent pieces High (with proper coating) Very high
Foam (EPS/polyurethane) Temporary installations, brand activations, events Low-medium without coating High
3D Printing Prototypes, mockups, small validation pieces Medium High at small scale
Polyurea (coating) Protection for fiberglass or foam pieces Very high Not applicable (a finish)

Fiberglass: the standard for monumental sculptures and brand characters

Fiberglass is our primary material at the fiberglass workshop because it allows precise molds, pieces that are lightweight yet structurally strong, and extremely high-detail finishes — from the facial expressions of a licensed character to the texture of a life-size gorilla sculpture. It's the recommended option whenever a piece will remain installed for years at a park, hotel or restaurant.

Foam (EPS/polyurethane): lightweight for fast production and temporary installations

When a project needs volume quickly — a brand activation, an expo stand, or a seasonal set piece — foam carved in our CNC laboratory delivers production speed without sacrificing visual detail. It's not the ideal choice for permanent outdoor pieces without a protective coating.

3D printing: useful for prototypes, limited at large scale

3D printing is excellent for validation mockups and small pieces, but for large-format sculptures (over 1-2 meters) printing time and cost grow exponentially, and structural strength and finish quality typically fall short of a piece sculpted and laminated in fiberglass. That's why, for monumental sculpture projects at hotels and theme parks, traditional fiberglass fabrication remains the most cost-effective option at full scale.

Polyurea: the layer that protects your investment from tropical weather

In destinations like Cancún, the Riviera Maya or Orlando, exposure to humidity, salt and intense sun is constant. Our polyurea workshop applies a waterproof, corrosion-resistant coating over fiberglass or foam pieces, extending their outdoor lifespan without altering the original design.

How we manufacture a custom statue or 3D character, step by step

  • Assessment and conceptualization at Atika Design, our creative and design team.
  • Modeling and structure in the CNC laboratory and carpentry workshop, based on the size and weight of the piece.
  • Molding and lamination in the fiberglass workshop to shape the final form and detail.
  • Finishing and color in the paint booth, matching licensed characters or brand designs exactly.
  • Polyurea coating applied when the piece will be installed outdoors.
  • Shipping logistics by sea, land or air to Mexico, the United States or the project's final destination, with on-site installation when required.

The entire process happens under one roof, at our 3,000 m² facility in Cancún, allowing consistent quality supervision and more predictable delivery times.

Licensed characters and monumental sculptures: real projects

Over 25 years, we've manufactured licensed characters and monumental sculptures for internationally recognized brands, including the Ninja Turtle and SpongeBob for Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts, Garfield for Nickelodeon Punta Cana, Hello Kitty for Burguerland, and original pieces such as the Gorilla Sculpture, the Purepecha Woman Sculpture and a reproduction of Buddha sculptures. You can see the details of these and other projects in our case studies section, where we document the design challenge, the material used and the final result for each piece.

This experience with licensed brands is also why we're proud members of IAAPA, the international theme park and attractions association, and why design teams from Karisma Hotels & Resorts, Playa Resorts and Nickelodeon Experience Design have worked with us on more than one project.

Frequently asked questions about custom statue and 3D character fabrication

  • How long does it take to manufacture a custom fiberglass statue?

Timelines depend on the size and level of detail of the piece, but by keeping design, modeling, fiberglass, painting and polyurea under one roof, we avoid the delays that come from outsourcing each stage separately.

  • Can you manufacture licensed characters for brands like Nickelodeon?

Yes. We've manufactured licensed characters following the brand-approval standards of studios such as Nickelodeon, matching official proportions, expressions and colors.

  • How durable are fiberglass statues in tropical climates?

With the right polyurea coating, fiberglass pieces are built to withstand the humidity, salt and intense sun typical of destinations like Cancún, the Riviera Maya and Florida.

  • Is a 3D printed statue better than a fiberglass sculpture?

For small pieces or prototypes, 3D printing is fast and affordable. For monumental sculptures or life-size brand characters, fiberglass offers better structural strength, finish quality and cost per cubic meter.

  • Do you manufacture statues and 3D characters for projects in the United States?

Yes. We have an office in Orlando, FL, and manufacture at our Cancún facility with established export logistics to hotels, parks and brands across the United States.
